1/26/2012: Lots of boats put in at Bucktail across the river from us this morning.
Recent snow and rain haven't blown the river out and guests report good fishing, especially for wild steelhead!
The Trinity River is home to a fantastic array of fish, including salmon, steelhead, German Brown trout and rainbow trout. Click here to see pictures and read about salmon spawning off our bank. The San Francisco Chronile wrote a good article about fly fishing with the Trinity Fly Shop, which you can read here.
You'll be fishing a minute after hopping out of bed and grabbing a cup of coffee and we can have a hearty and abundant breakfast ready for you no matter what time you want to be on the water. Scroll down for a list of excellent fishing guides.
Check out these recommended guide services:
The Fly Shop (Redding, just off I-5): This is one of the big guns world wide for fly fishers. A class act all the way.

Trinity Fly Shop (on Lewiston Road between 299 and Lewiston) is an instiutution up here. Herb and his wife Pat own the shop. Herb's the fisher and Pat ties flies. The San Francisco Chronicle did a great story on Herb. Read it for a keen glimpse into the world of steelhead, the Trinity, fishing and life.
Steve's Trinity Guide Service: Several guests use Steve's and really speak well of him.

There are a lot of different approaches to fishing, so it makes sense there are all kinds of guides out there. It's important to use guides who have permits for our waters. Here is the complete BLM List.

"You are lovely people, so gracious. See you again, I hope." Dianne Vermillion/Los Angeles, CA

10/2/2011: First Steelhead of the Season for Our Guests,
Dianne Vermillion Caught It Celebrating Her 60th Birthday,
She Came to Us Through Clearwater Lodge,
It Was a Wild Fish (still is; catch & release), She Caught Two,
and It Was Her First Steelhead Ever.
How cool is that?

9/22/11: Our guest Janusz Perykasza (above left) landed this King Salmon at Bucktail Hole,
a 5 minute walk from his cabin. Click here to learn more about fishing the Trinity from The Fly Shop in Redding's web site.

8/6/2011: Here is our guest Eric Heinens with one very big salmon caught this week on the Trinity.
He let this one go, but his brother Jason brought home a nickel-bright 5 pounder.
In a joint venture, we fileted and marinated the fish and Jason barbecued it to perfection. It was astounding!
Ocean fresh, ruby red meat. We all had a delightful dinner on the patio alongside the river. Come catch your fish!
On our water bill for our Dunsmuir vacation rental is the message:
"Big fish being caught on the [Upper Sac]. Have you caught yours yet?"

2/2/2011: "We each caught a wild steelhead! YEA! It was Debra Ashby's first steelhead trip,
so she had an especially great time!" Audrey Williams/Costa Mesa, CA

Audrey and Deborah hooked up with their favorite guide, Mike Parker from The Fly Shop in Redding, to do some steelhead fishing this week. Both did well, and Deborah caught her first steelhead!
For parties with some fishers and others who don't fish, but would like to come up with the fishers,
try skiing! We have been skiing Mount Shasta Ski Park and love it.
We have never encountered such a friendly resort, from the lift operators to management.
A real class act, and they have great runs! We've had guests who ski Shasta all day, then return to fish late afternoons.
11/15/2010: "We want to go back next year!"
Fly Fishers Club of Orange County, CA

9/19/2010: "Great facility! [Alpen Glow] Had a great time. We enjoyed your place and I think it worked out well for the group.
The guys had success fishing for salmon and although it was early for fly fishing for steelhead, I managed to catch 7 fish and a 20 inch wild adult.
This group of guys from Livermore has been getting together for 29 years, although I am the newbie addition and have been going on trips since 1995, or only 15 years! I first introduced them to the Trinity area about 14 years ago and this was our 4th trip. They continue to be surprised by the great fishing available there. It is supposed to rain quite a bit the next couple of days, which should really get the fish moving up the Trinity and bode well for this fall!"
Tom Vargas/The Fun Bunch ["The Fun Bunch" is our first fishing group that has it's own checking account.
July 29, 2020: STEELHEAD FISHING 2010 UPDATE FROM MICHAEL CARANCI OF THE FLY SHOP IN REDDING:
"Some of the truly great things about the Trinity - besides its apparent beauty - are the numbers of steelhead that return each winter, and the length of the season. Steelhead are starting to enter the system right now, and they won’t slow down until March. That said, the most consistent populations of fish in the upper river don’t start showing until the end of October/early November. Once they show up, there are fish around until the end of February/early March, with fish constantly on the move and fresh fish arriving throughout. During that November-February time frame, the fish are there and the water and weather conditions will play the biggest factor in successful steelheading. November is probably the
most popular month of the season (better weather, more crowds), while our guides generally prefer the harsher weather months of December, January, and February because there’s less pressure on the river." This translates to BOOK YOUR CABIN FOR WINTER STEELHEAD EARLY!

Fall fishing on the Trinity is delightful~picture taken in front of our Bucktail location
The Trinity River is home to a fantastic array of fish, including salmon, steelhead, German Brown trout and rainbow trout. Lewiston Lake and Trinity Lake
offer excellent fishing as well, and the tributaries are also very popular. Steelhead fly fishing on the Trinity is easily one of the most popular and addictive
forms of fishing and it's practiced with zeal by dedicated fishers. These people glory in the icy air and frigid waters of this winter sport, and little can compare
to the look on their faces when they catch their first steelhead. This falls somewhere in the same class as holding their first child; sometimes above it.
"As a long time Trinity River angler and guide, and the Director of Outfitters for The Fly Shop in Redding, I've had the opportunity over the years to visit many of the different motels, lodges, and cabins -- several of which have come and gone -- along the Trinity River. For sheer seclusion, access, and cozy, comfortable accommodations, the cabins at the Trinity River Adventure Inn are certainly among the best.
My wife Kerry and I [below], along with some friends, were fortunate enough to spend a couple of nights recently staying at the Trinity River Adventure Inn, specifically the Alpen Glow and Carriage House cabins. We enjoyed our stay immensely, spending much of our time simply relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery and tranquility of the Trinity River flowing just past the back deck. Of course, we made sure to wet a line, too, with some great success in the productive steelhead runs accessible only from the Trinity River Adventure Inn cabins.
