5/17/2012: The Upper Sac is a beloved fishing river, as are many of the lakes and streams in the north state, and easily accessed from our Dunsmuir Haus.

5/8/2012: "You have an amazing home and it is obvious you keep it up. We look forward to our next visit to Dunsmuir
and will make sure our other family is aware of your place for when they visit." Tammy Allert/Elk Grove, CA

Steph and I got the idea to get a place in Dunsmuir because we enjoy skiing Shasta so much. Since a lot of our guests at our river cabins on the Trinity come to fish, and we know they also fish the Upper Sac, we figured those two sports would make Dunsmuir a natural for another vacation rental. Check our customer feedback on our Trinity cabins here to see we do things right.

Dunsmuir is a small town with lots of charm.
Nestled in the breath-taking mountains just off I-5, it's situated alongside the Sacramento River.
You can arrive by your own vehicle, or by train).
Our place is just a few blocks from the station, with one of those blocks being a moderate climb.
Whether you drop in for a night or for a longer stay, there are neat places you can explore nearby,
even by foot! And Mount Shasta Ski Park is just a 20 minute drive from our door.

Some of our Dunsmuir & Beyond Favorites:
All Dunsmuir businesses are just a few blocks from our place, so guests can settle in and walk to dinner and shops

    Dunsmuir Brewery Works
A micro brew pub with a variety of hand crafted ales, plus fine food including vegetarian options. We've had some knockout meals there.
Their web site has Brewmaster notes that describe the process with each batch; the notes and pictures are frequently updated. Located on Dunsmuir Avenue.
Within walking distance from the Haus.

    Cornerstone Bakery and Café
Imaginatively prepared, hearty foods; fresh baked breads and other bakery items.
On Dunsmuir Avenue in the middle of downtown, which is about, oh, 2 blocks long. Within walking distance from the Haus.

    Café Maddalena
Perhaps the best restaurant meal we've had in ten years was had here in the fall of 2011. Our next meal at Cafe' Maddelena was almost as good and also great!.
Located in the historic district of Dunsmuir, the highly Cafe Maddalena serves freshly prepared authentic Mediterranean cuisine. Indoor and garden seating.
Within walking distance from the Haus (just a one block walk up the hill and the rest is flat).

    Sengthong's
A Dunsmuir tradition, Sengthong's features Thai and other Asian foods. Highly regarded for good reason, it can be a bit slow, but is well worth the wait.
Within walking distance from the Haus.

    Pizza Factory
A family-friendly place guests have raved about. Incredibly friendly owners welcome and charm cranky kids.

Within walking distance from the Haus.

    Ted Fay Fly Shop
A 50 year institution in Dunsmuir. Fly fishers have to drop in this shop for local knowledge, good humor and great gear.
Also just a few blocks from us in downtown Dunsmuir; can't miss it.

    Shasta Ski Park
See "A Question in the Branches" at the bottom of this page!). So much friendlier than most resorts and a lot of fun. 20 minutes from Dunsmuir.
Season passes are on sale now and a great deal.

    The Goat Tavern
Another great place for a beer, although one of those beers cost me $100 because I got talked into going back to Shasta Base Camp
for a really nice vest I really didn't need. The Goat's burgers are huge & tasty. Located in Mount Shasta.
The Goat holds the record for the fastest-consumed keg of ale. It was brewed by Dunsmuir Brewery Works.

Check out the Siskiyou Visitors' Bureau Web Site for a lot more reasons why you want to come to this beautiful area.
And after Siskiyou County, come see us on the Trinity River! See you soon, Heidi & Steph

4/10/2012: A Question in the Branches

As a bunch of you already know, we love skiing Shasta. The Ski Park has the friendliest crew of any ski resort we have ever checked out, which includes California, Utah (Heid lived at the foot of the Wasatch Range for 8 years), Oregon and Washington (where Steph was a ski instructor). This had a lot to do with why we bought and set up our Alpine Ski & Fish Haus in Dunsmuir. And it also explains why we are spending the last full week of the season up here skiing.

So this morning, we were on the lift a few minutes after 9 AM and as we went up, two couples went down on the lift.
This is highly unusual. They weren't wearing skis or snowboards, so what were they doing up there?
"VIPs checking the place out?" Steph conjectured, and I nodded, thinking of no better reason.

Steph had just gotten his skis hot-waxed in the rental shop, and I decided to have mine done as well after our first few runs. So I dropped my skis off and met up with Steph in Mud Creek, the espresso shop. I walked into a festive scene, with a fellow excitedly talking to Steph.

"Heidi!" Steph announced, "this is Andy; he owns the Ski Park!" But that was just the beginning of the news.
After we shook hands and told Andy Aguilera the obvious, that he runs a class act up there, I learned his family had big news concerning his daughter, Rosie, and her boyfriend Eric Janssen.

Eric is a Santa Clara city police officer and he works graveyard. He and his dad drove up last night at midnight, converging with the rest of the family members. I'm not sure what the cover story was, but Rosie didn't know what was up when they headed out snowboarding this morning. She certainly didn't know why Eric insisted they walk out onto the tiny deck of the little Black Diamond Grill at the top of Douglas to take in the view, since it was snowing and pretty dark at the time.

Confused, but amiable, Rosie looked out at the view, then down at the snow in front of her. Last night, Eric had had one of the ski park's guys write, "ROSIE, WILL U MARRY ME? in fir branches stuck into the snow. She went crazy
(and said "Yes") and I'm thinking that's when everyone popped out of the trees to congratulate them, before converging on Mud Creek. I'm hazy on a few details, but remember, I got there late.

Here is the truncated message in the snow thanks to Steph, who went up while I waited for my skis, and took the shot. He couldn't get all the words in, so he got up onto a wet chair in his ski boots (mind you, Steph is a leg amputee... and in ski boots on a slippery chair!?), capturing what you see here. And since Photoshop seems to have disappeared from our laptop computer, I'm faking it, but you get the idea. Pretty sweet, huh?
Congratulations to Eric & Rosie, a couple of nice people who have a bright future ahead of them.
