SOW'S EAR~Bucktail

Sow's Ear
Located in the little community of Bucktail near Lewiston

(Sow's Ear is great for small reunions such as this one of old school buddies Summer 2018)

SOW'S EAR RATES/CABIN DETAILS/AMENITIES:

Sow's Ear is a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom cabin that has a full laundry, cozy wood stove (we provide the wood), Monitor heater and A/C. It is end-of-the-road-quiet, has a bit of a river view from the wonderful covered front porch and the front bedrooms get lovely river sounds when the windows are open. It's located just up the drive from our cabin and guests are encouraged to treat our 600+ feet of shoreline, river patio with fire pit and the hot tub as their own.

To better understand the layout, watch the video here. Check availability here.

We recently added all sorts of great stuff such as fabulous, thick carpet, indestructible wood flooring, very handsome antiques with intriguing stories and don't forget the cots for the porch! We also put in a beautiful matching sofa and chair at Sow's Ear featuring a rich tapestry design of fish, canoes, elk and black bears. Black bears rifle through our compost bins on a regular basis so we felt it was only right to honor those swift, sleek and incredibly devilish creatures that add so much to our mountain life. Don't worry; you'll rarely see them because they come at night and disappear when they hear noise from the cabins.
Regular Season Rates excluding July 1-August 15: $165 per night for up to 6 guests. Add 5% tax & $100 cleaning fee. Parties of 1-2 who use only one bed may receive a substantial lodging and cleaning discount; ask us about them).

Peak Season Rates July 1-August 15: $175 per night. Add 5% tax & $100 cleaning fee.

Quiet Season Rates Begin 2/11/2020 and we have added a special low rate for 1-2 guests and 1-2 beds  (Quiet Season usually kicks in after Presidents Day Weekend) & go to the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend.
$145 per night: Add 5% tax & $100 cleaning fee. During this season we will consider extended stays with further reductions and welcome medical travelers. A stay of 30 days or more is not subject to lodging tax.
$125 per night (1-2 guests/1-2 beds): Add 5% tax & $85 cleaning fee. During this season we will consider extended stays with further reductions and welcome medical travelers. A stay of 30 days or more is not subject to lodging tax.
Call for discounted rates for 3 or more nights, special rates close to the current date and also for extended stay rates.

Heads & Beds: The cabin is priced for a maximum number of guests and we do expect your numbers to be accurate, because each gue st adds a bit of wear and tear, pressure on the septic system and water demands.
We will consider additional guests, but prefer not to go over 6; if more guests are allowed, they are $16 each per night. (Infants are not charged.) If the cabin is rented by 1-2 people and only one bed and one bedroom is used, we'll reduce the cleaning fee to $85.

Amenities: Sow's Ear has just about everything one could imagine. The kitchen is well-stocked with cookware, dining ware, many cooking staples, cleaning materials and more. Bath towels, wash cloths, dish towels, laundry soap, dryer towels, dish soap, a hair dryer and thick terry hot tub robes for adults are all included.  Outside is a Weber BBQ and a stainless steel gas BBQ, plus we will loan you a pellet BBQ upon request. There is a teak dining set by the BBQs and all of the chairs and tables around the fire pit on our patio are for your use, too.
NEW 2019-2020:  Kitchen remodel includes custom cabinets.
NEW 2018:  New carpeting and furnishings. More antiques. Deluxe extra-large and extra-sturdy adult cots that can also be bunk beds. We'll provide the pads and you can sleep out on the porch and fall asleep to the songs of frogs, crickets and osprey; just bring your sleeping bag!  Really cute animal sleeping bags for the kids (can be used with the cots, too!).

Phones/Wi-Fi/TV:  Cell coverage is sketchy up here but you don't have to go without at the cabin anymore! It has 3 MPS Wi-Fi throughout (this means you can stream movies but don't expect to use multiple devices with any success at all; this ain't the city) and most fairly recent model cell phones have an option in Settings to enable cell phone calling and texting over the internet. The cabin has a Smart TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. Guests may also choose many pay-per-view options as well as free services such as Pandora for music, CBS for news and much more.

Dog Stuff: We welcome friendly dogs but they must be pre-approved. There is a $15 charge per dog per stay. Good dogs may run free here and will eventually discover they can't catch the deer that cruise by, but they may be in another county before they realize this, so please bear it in mind. If you're involved in a day-long outing such as a guided fishing trip, consider boarding your dog(s) at Weaverville Pet Motel (1790 Main St, Weaverville. Call 530.623.0060). They treat animals very well.

Hot Tub down by the river:  The hot tub is located down the drive from Sow's Ear and upriver of our cabin. It overlooks the Trinity River and is far enough from our place so that guests don't feel crowded. The tub's about a minute's stroll away from Sow's Ear, as is the river. Guests are encouraged to use the tub just about any time and we're OK with some happy noise because this is your holiday, after all. Thick terry robes that can go outside for tubbing are provided for up to 4 guests. Otherwise, please bring beach towels.

Get Out & Stay Out Options:   We live here because we love being outside in all seasons. We offer fantastic stand-up paddle board lessons and rentals (free introductory lessons for guests); kayak lessons and guided river trips and kayak  and SUP  rentals for the lakes. See it all hereThere is great hiking right out the door, either straight up into the woods or on pavement within the little community of Bucktail. There is a hard-packed dirt road leading out of Bucktail that goes all the way over the mountain to Highway 299 near Weaverville. Serious runners and bikers (and their dogs) love this road! The Trinity River and lakes are all popular for fishing and trout, salmon and steelhead are all possibilities (depending on the body of water). Our Fishing page can help sort out the details. These are just some of what Trinity has to offer. You're sure to come up with more!

Directions: From Redding, drive west on 299 to the SECOND turn-off for Lewiston; it will be on your right.
From Weaverville/west, drive about 12-15 minutes and take the first Lewiston turn-off (it will be on your left; you will also see a sign for the winery).

Check your odometer and drive 3 miles, passing Trinity Fly Shop and One Maple Winery. At three miles, take a LEFT onto Browns Mountain Road (there is a small ranch on the left corner with a red and white sign that says "TIRE REPAIR" and on the right is a sign pointing left for Bucktail Hole and Trinity River Access). Drive down the hill and over the river. Take the first right after the river, onto Salmon Drive. Go one block where Salmon dead-ends at Steelhead Circle. Right on Steelhead and go to the end (about 1 long block). Sow's Ear is on the left at the end there is a sign out front. Curve left up the driveway and you are home.

Our own cabin is at the very end on the right. It's round and sage green and behind a tall, weathered fence. Come down and say hi, or just go on into Sow's Ear and get settled. Our patio with its fire pit, 600+ feet of riverfront and the hot tub are to be considered yours and we won't be happy if you don't take advantage of them! Check availability here.

" We Hamilton boys had a really fine time just enjoying each others' company in such fine surroundings. Your Sow's Ear is exactly our sort of place for the kind of annual reunion our family needs. About every minute or so one of us would comment on the peaceful and ever-present music of the Trinity River. I especially took in the layered soundtrack of the abundant bird life. I had a good time just hanging out in your nicely done kitchen, turning out much better food than those other lugs can invent. Made a stellar apple pie that would have made Aunt Bee proud. As we were getting ready to leave, I set my two brothers on the road early as they had 450 miles to cover and because I wanted to sit alone on the front porch to soak up the views and river music. Aaaaahh yes, I'm 'there' right now, as I write. I know an earthly paradise when I see one, and I want some more."
